The sun goddess Amaterasu’s grandson, Ninigi-no-Mikoto descended through layers of clouds with other five gods (six stars in total). The destination was the southernmost point of Japan, Takachiho in Hyūga of Tsukushi under the guidance of Saruta-hiko (a crane carrying a pine branch in its mouth).

Ninigi-no-Mikoto’ s great-grandson, Iharebiko-no-Mikoto set off on the eastern expedition. He travelled Ise (sacred straw festoon), Kumano, and Yamato under the guidance of a mythical raven (three-legged raven). Iharebiko-no-Mikoto was enthroned at Kashihara palace of Unebi. He became the first emperor of Japan, Jimmu (imperial chrysanthemum emblem).

The emperor reigns Toyo-Ashihara-no-Mizuho-no-Kuni (Land of Abundant Reed Plains and Rice Fields). Every spring, the deity of rice fields descends on cherry trees (cherry blossoms). It is said that “sakura” derives from “sa (deity’s)” and “kura (seat)” or from “sakuya” in a goddess’ name “Konohana-Sakuya”. Her husband is Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the great-grandfather of Emperor Jimmu.

On the first Ceremony Day of the Rat (Ne-no-hi) in the New Year, the emperor prays for the rich harvest (ears of rice) and the empress worships the god of sericulture. She sweeps a silkworm-raising room with a ritural broom. The ancient object is the Broom for the Ne-no-hi Ceremony in the Shosoin Repository. It was originally decorated with beads of various colours like the broom in this foot rule.

A torii (gateway to a Shinto shrine) and the sun represent Ise Grand Shrine dedicated to the solar goddess Amaterasu, the grandmother of Ninigi-no-Mikoto. A deer, whose antlers are shed and regrown every year, implies that the nation continues forever.

The back begins with Michelia compressa. When Amaterasu hid herself in the heavenly rock cave, Ame-no-uzume-no-Mikoto invited her out by gingling the fruits of this plant, which is the prototype of the bell for Kagura (Shinto music).

The layers of clouds and six stars represent the descent of Ninigi-no-Mikoto and other five gods including Ame-no-uzume-no-Mikoto.

Ninigi-no-Mikoto received grains of rice and the Three Sacred Treasures (Mirror Yata-no-Kagimi, Jewel Yasaka-no-Magatama, Sword Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi) from his grandmother Amaterasu, and descended at Takachiho under the guidance of Saruta-hiko (a crane carrying a festoon in its mouth).

It was a southern country where Citrus tachibana blooms. They say that “tachibana” means “tachi (standing)” + “bana<hana (flower)” , i.e. the flower on which a deity is standing. It is a symbol of the vitality. Ninigi-no-Mikoto and Konohana-Sakuya-Hime (a pair of mandarin ducks) had three children. The youngest’ s grandchild, that is, Ninigi-no-Mikoto’ s great-grandson is Emperor Jimmu (chrysanthemum). A Chinese character“菊”means “getting together many grains of rice in one place”. The grains of rice that Amaterasu gave her grandson have brought abundant harvests to the country.

Since then, Toyo-Ashihara-no-Mizuho-no-Kuni (Land of Abundant Reed Plains and Rice Fields) has continued. In this country, the deer swings his antlers which are shed and regrown every year, and lots of dragonflies fly over rice fields. Our small island country surrounded by the sea (wave crest pattern on the sides), Japan, it sometimes has been at the mercy of the nature, and yet it has been blessed by the nature and has cultivated various lives.
