(A man who created Raku ware1)

Happy Lion
WOoooo(I in Chinese)am a lion of ni-cai pottery on the roof having roots in Sothern Chinese san-cai and in Chinese-style Lion (e.g. KANO Eitoku’s : upper fig.). Wo was made by Chojiro (1516?-1589?), who is said to be a descendant of Chinese tiler, who grew in the atmosphere of the Age of Civil Wars and embodied in me his dynamic aesthetic sense of Azuchi period.
You might ask meeeee (the lion is one of the big cats),
“Chojiro? He is a potter who founded Raku ware in Momoyama period, isn't he? A man who created the tea bowl for the tea ceremony together with Sen no Rikyu(1522-1591). A man who pursued Wabi-cha, the simple beauty in a typical Japanese style. Was he originally a foreigner and had made that flamboyant lion?”
It's understandable for you to be surprised at that. Wo also am blown away that he came to make such plain tea bowls! Let’s listen to his monologue and dialogue with Sen no Rikyu.

Morose Tea bowl
On a day of drizzling rain in June, a man visited my atelier. He was Sen Soeki (Rikyu since 1585) , a master of tea of a ruler ODA Nobunaga (1534-1582). What did he want me, a descendant of Chinese tiler? He said that he had seen one of my lions.
Rikyu: To come to the point, could you kill your lion?
Chojiro: Kill my lion…what do you mean?
Rikyu: I would like to ask you to quit your current production and to devote yourself to my request…to my tea bowls.
Chojiro: Your tea bowls…to be used in your tea ceremony?
Rikyu: Yes, the tea bowls to be used in my tea ceremony house, in the narrower and dimmer space than before.
Chojiro: But I am a tiler of sancai and I do not know about the potter's wheel.
Rikyu: You do not need the potter’s wheel, which produces the round bowl spreading out. What I want is the bowl towards the inside. You can mold it by hand like kneading that lion. But this is just the beginning. You should scrape it by a spatula. You should cut off the framboyant and dynamic elements of YOUR lion. I need the tea bowls specialized to make and drink ground green tea in MY dim tea ceremony house. A mere plain tea bowl cannot bear the pressure of MY tea ceremony house. It must be a tough and supple one that absorbs the pressure. Only YOU, a craftsman who has the continental power beyond the sea within the blood, can do that.
The sweets in those days were chestnuts, pomegranate, kelp, shiitake mushroom, etc.
