(Roi de l' oiseau)

(Roi de l\' oiseau)_a0332314_18225799.jpg

The exotic-looking bird sometimes seen in Shosoin Treasures’ design, the
hoopoe, whose Japanese name Yatsu-gashira (<kashira) derives from the shape of his crest like eight heads. Because the bird often appears in Persian poems, I thought it must be a bird of the Silk Road. In fact, it is a migratory that travels from Africa to Europe, sometimes to Central Asia, China and Japan! It is a strong bird that flies in the sky like a bullet.

This bird is called hoopoe in English,
la huppe fasciée in French, hoo-poo-poo in China, and in Perisian, hud hud:
In most languages it is named by its characteristic calling voice.

The hoopoe used to be seen in whole Europe, but it is now an endangered species because of the modernization of agriculture. For example, the shed suitable for nesting has disappeared recently. In a region of Austria, people protect and breed this bird according to an ORF documentary, Return of the Hoopoe (2012).

In Aristophanes’ comedy The Birds, the hoopoe is the king of birds because of its crown-like crest. In Ovid’ s Metamorphoses, a prequel of that comedy, Thracian king Tereus was changed into a hoopoe with bristled crest because of his rage. According to the above documentary, the real hoopoe raises his crest to threaten the enemy.

A wise bird hoopoe mentioned in Quran is a hero in Conference of the Birds by Attar of Nishapur (c.1110 – c.1221). A Persian astronomer and poet Hafiz (1048-1131) sings the crest waving in the breeze. The beauty of Perso-Arabic script incited me to learn the elementary grammer but I’ ve forgotten almost of all. I would like to quote the first two lines.

Oh, hoopoe, a messanger of the breeze, I send you to Sheba.

Look ! From where to where I dispatch you.
(translation of snowdrop)

Honda Koichi is one of the first Arabic calligraphers as Japanese. The above sword-like script expresses a proverb “The sword proves the value only by cutting something”.

A series of Koranic scripts were accorded the honor of being in the collection of the British Museum.
