Rabbit by Hoitsu (detail)

Since my youth, I have liked plants more than animals. While my brother was a fona-lover, I am a flora-lover. I feel more sympathy for the silent plants and flowers than for the living animals. However, I once tried to paint a rabbit on a fusuma sliding door. When you open that fusuma, HOP! my rabbit jumps out of the grove!…Unfortunately, I could not paint the rabbit itself as well as my brother had done!

Autumn Flowers and Quails.

I tried the realistic description in Autumn Flowers and Quails. Maruyama or Nagasaki schools always challenge me to paint a detailed pictures. I am lucky to live in Edo, the substantial capital where Shogun lives, because I can get enough information on paintings in other regions.

They say that the mother-quail plays dead in front of the enemy in order to protect her children. Such a habit moved me to paint the quails hiding among silver grass leaves…but the leaves have hidden in part my detailed description!

This time I chose not the silver but the gold ground for Musashi-no Plain illuminated by the moon. I wanted to surround warmly the quail’s family. It is also the symbolic colour of the autumnal havest that fosters the birds.

Persimmon

I once tried a picture with no bird and yet expressing the bird. Look, my Persimmon. People leave several red fruits for hungry birds during the late autumn and early winter. Even if the silver grass withers, the plantain has not disappeared yet. Even If this weed disappears, soon it will bloom again in early spring!

There was a painter opposite to me in Kyoto. ITO Jakuchū (1716-1800), whose reputation reached Edo. His “grand miniature” was amazing, where he could not help focusing all the minute things in his painting! Is it because he used to be a landlord of a big greengrocery that he had such a unique viewpoint toward the vegetation? Because he always kept an eye on the worm holes and bruises of the vegetables in his grocery, he often painted them in his painting? This style, sometimes lively, but rather unhealthy, is not mine.

I do not have so deep an attachment to the realism as Jakuchu. I am not anxious to cover all the plants and animals in the world. What fascinates me is what is close to me like my double and touches my heartbut I could not help painting by myself also that white belly of a lizard !(lol)

Jakuchu was unexpectedly said to be good at the humorous ink painting (upper fig.), too. I am not surprised. A painter would be unbalanced if he painted only such miniatures for years! I hear there are several lazy and easy-going members among a swarm of diligent ants. The human mind also needs the play and the lightness…

Fish by Jakuchu

I was fascinated by Encyclopedias that were popular both in Kyoto and Edo for the last several decades. I could paint with confidence and pleasure the fish served in restaurants. So did Jakuchu in Nishiki Market, I suppose. Make the decision, please. Which is the winner, Jakuchu in the West or Hoitsu in the East ? …I am just kidding. It' s unfair, as these figures are cropped images. Salt, please!

Globefish and Cuttlefish (detail) by Hoitsu

Here is a real vie, mais non, a collaboration ! One Chinese character ”dream ()” like a lying man was drawn by my deceased brother, a butterfly by me. Young Hoitsu lived with a light spirit like a butterfly! And still now, I can release my spirit with the help of the painting and poem.
