Lattice of Yoshiwara painted by KATSUHIKA Oui

Takekurabe written by HIGUCHI Ichiyo, illustrated by KABURAGI Koyokata

Shoen(1875-1949) in the West, Kiyokata(1878-1972) in the East. KABURAGI Kiyokata was a son of a popular writer, and a discipline of MIZUNO Toshikata (a disciple of Kuniyoshi 's disciples). This down-town boy was always surrounded by colour prints in the shops selling picture books (the right in the following figure). He grew up to be a Japanese-style painter in Tokyo, the new Japanse capital where the ambiance of Edo has gradually faded and the Western culture started to flow in.

November rain by Kiyokata

Maestro Kiyokata’ s paintings always have a literary taste. In the current where the fine arts or the pure painting were evaluated, he maintained “the painting should not be so exclusive.” “The writer and the painter are just like the tayu and the shamisen-lute player.”

While looking at this emaki scroll that Maestro painted in the Showa period, I remember the house game in my childhood. Oh no, in fact, I rarely played house with my sister like this scene. But why does this painting bring me such a nostalgia?

“Although every facial feature is not ideal for the beauty, her voice is thin and clear, her eyes are charming and her carriage is lively(…) ” (Takekurabe by HIGUCHI Ichiyo, translation of snowdrop) Here is a descrption of Midori. This is like Scarlett O' Hara in Gone with the Wind, isn’ t this? Maestro painted me in a summer cotton kimono with iris pattern and placed a hairpin in the shape of a flat fan. This fresh girl is a bit different from the graceful Kyoto woman.

I did not know the childish plays. I would buy twenty rubber balls for my twenty classmates, or buy up all the toys in the shop because my sister, a popular courtesan gave me much pocket money. The adult flattered me that my western accent was cute, but I had a hard time joining in the eastern children. When I could not assimilate into a flock of sparrows, I had no choice but to become a peachick, a luxuriant queen.

Midori hesitating to give a sclap of red cloth to Shinnyo mending his geta

The peachick’ s first love was a gray heron in the temple. Shinnyo, Nobu-san was a fastidious and introverted boy. The pert peachick was presuming he does not like her. In the wisteria season, she offered her red silk
handkerchief to him, but a gealous boy teased and embarrassed him. And in the winter rain, she threw a sclap of red cloth through the lattice to help him, but he did not receive that.

Vanity case of Higuchi Ichiyo, the author of Takekurabe

On a Day of the Cock in November, I did my hair in pompadour-like style for the first time. Everyone looked back at me, a young lady like a Kyoto doll. But I wanted to go back to the last year. If I could play house with paper dolls for ever! If I could see Nobu-san off under a gaslight forever and ever! Oh, bother! I do not want to become an adult!

Since that day, I left off playing with my friends. On a frosty morning, someone had put an artificial narcissus into the lattice. I arranged it in a single‐flower vase and observed it without knowing the sender. Why is this flower so touching and emotional? Later I heard that it was on the following day that Nobu-san entered a school of Buddhism.

Tomb of Miss Higuchi by Kiyokata(1902)
There is a tomb of Sakai Hoitsu also inTsukiji Hongan-ji Temple.

This is the tomb of Higuchi Ichiyo(1872-1896). Maestro Kiyokata read Tomb of Ichiyo(1900)by IZUMI Kyoka and painted the illusion of Midori visiting her grave in 1902. How romantic and touching! This chic kimono resembles Shoen’ s favorite, rather than a courtesan’ s. Thank you so much, Maestro.

Gartenhortensie(Yata-dera Temple)

Kiyokata loved the hydrangea and named his house Hydrangea Hut.
The following picture is painted by Siebold, who had a relation to Katsushika Oui.
He left his wife (O-Taki-san) and daughter in Japan and named this blue hydrangea "Otakusa".
