(Hoopoe)(pinterest)(youtube

Have you seen the bird named hoopoe? He is sometimes seen in Shosoin Treasures. His Japanese name Yatsu-gashira (<kashira) derives from the shape of his crest like eight heads. This bird is a migratory that travels from Africa to Europe, sometimes to Central Asia, China and Japan. It is a strong bird who flies in the sky like an arrow.

One hoopoe has flown to my house. The bird is engraved on a blue ivory ball with bachiru decoration by MORITA Kura. On the reverse, another bird is flying but with no crest. She is a Japanese duck. The hoopoe that had traveled from Africa to Japan via Europe or Central Asia, met the duck in Nara. How about listening to their conversation? Oh, it resembles a chapter in Kojiki, Records of Ancient Matters.

Hoopoe (Ookume-no-Mikoto) : Beautiful song, seven-colored voicesoh, seven maidens are enjoying picnicking. Che bellelike seven lilies of the field! Emperor (Jimmualso seems to be fascinated by them. I should immediately offer him a song to speak for him.

Emperor Jimmu
: Oh, that' s Ookume all over! You have spoken for me exactly! I give you a song in reply. (According to Shakespeare, the king uses "I" when he has friendly feeling towards his vassal.)

Duck (Isukeyori-hime) : Strangersthey have the crest on the heads and are observing us. Oh, one of them approaches me, what should I do ?
Hoopoe (Ookume)
: Buongiorno signorina, I am a messenger of Emperor. He says, " We want you as Empress. (royal we) "

Duck
(Isukeyori-hime) : What ? This tanned and tattooed man, what is he saying? ” We wants you as Empress ”…?Anyway, what a clear voice! He has a blue voice that is suitable for the paean.(snowdrop: Kume was a tribe of the royal army and military music. Blue signified the victory according to Mr. Morita.)And what brilliant eyes, what mysterious slit eyes ! How many countries, waves, and flowers have these eyes seen till today?

Hoopoe (Ookume) : (saying to himself)Wow! What a good singer this shy girl is! She is witty, lovely, and white like un giglio della Madonna … I found myself singing:

Because I want directly to see you, signorina, I have tatooed eyes, sharp eyes.

(Madonna Lily)

Duck
(Isukeyori-hime) : Are these tattooed-eyes for me ? Did he get a tattoo so as to meet me fortuitously?! ― I will serve you. I found myself saying that.

(Lilium japonicum)

Duck (Isukeyori-hime) : And he embraced me that night, by Sai-gawa River surrounded by sai-flowers (lilies). But next morning, I was shocked by my husband’s pale skin and the eyes without the tattoo. He explained that the southerner with tattooed-eyes only had spoken for Emperor. But that man sang clearly, Because I want to see you directly, I have tatooed eyes, sharp eyes.” ―
