Big Lion painted by TAKEUCHI Seihoc.1902)

Hot, hot, hot! I am a lion. The islands of dragonfly, Japan is too cramped for me. In this country, from antiquity, the lion has protected the Shinto Shrine with the dog, has been Manjushri’ s conveyance or the symbol of the prowessbut no one had seen us directly. In the Meiji era, Japanese people began to visit Europe and see us in the zoos.

1900

Paris Expo of 1867)

TAKEUCHI Seiho, a Japanese-style painter was one of them, who came to the Paris Exposition of 1900. His name Seiho means “Phoenix lives here”. But he had been compared to “Nue” also in Japan! Do you know the nue? They say it is a Japanese chimera that has the face of a monkey, the legs of a tiger, the body of a Japanese Raccoon Dog, the tail of a snake, and the voice of a scaly thrush. It was the nickname to ridicule a young painter who combined various styles of painting…like representing one scene in English, French, German, and Japanese, at the same time! Bon, whether he was a phoenix or whether he was a nue, he was observing the birds, dogs, cats, etc. with his raptor-like eyes.

(Lion Bridge made in Naka-no-shima, Osaka, 1915)

In the exposition, he was sketching the lion statues before sketching real ones. It is prudent of him to first grasp the details by the still object. In Antwerp or London, he was sketching the lions in the Royal Zoo every day while extending his period of stay by three months. In Italy, he observed the Lion of Venice also. In 1902, a lion reached Ueno Zoological Gardens in Tokyo, which also this painter sketched.
He mixed the gold paint and the sepia pigment made from squid ink that he had obtained in Europe, and painted various lions on various screens. How skillful! He had admired the sfumato technique of Leonardo da Vinci, and yet his own painting was full of the Oriental grace. The traditional artistic portraits of the lion have changed to Golden Lion of Seiho!

Do you find me (Big Lion) bigheaded and getting summer heat fatigue? Look, I am on a folding screen! If you fold this, my head will become deep and my paws will stick out. Now I am more animated and solid! The byobu-screen is a three-dimensional painting!

And the contrast between the head (depicted in such great detail) and the body (more roughly depicted) produces “kire (briskness; crispness)”, which is the term of the haiku. Seiho made haiku also. His paintings with the space and with the vivid contrast of the colours, might be similar to the haiku. While one should "cut" the haiku, one should "sing" the tanka.

Seiho's haiku and sketch of a goldfish represent the image of his beloved daughter who died at the age of two. She had often imitated a goldfish' s round mouth. The succession of her death and his sister' s in the previous year made him sad.
