箕面の滝へ（大雅の絵)（Monologue of Ike no Taiga７）

箕面（5月）＊Minoh

　かえでが京を去り、春が過ぎ、夏が過ぎた。ある秋晴れの日。私は思い立って滝を写しに出かけることにした。かつて琵琶湖の水に気づかされた、流水を描く難しさ。その究極をゆくのが滝である。絵手本の滝をにらんでいるより、実物の箕面の滝を見に行こう。大坂ならば、京から数日の旅だ。

　Spring and summer have passed since Kaede left Kyoto. On a clear autumn day, I made up my mind to go to sketch a waterfall. Lake Biwa had taught me it was difficult to represent the flowing water, and the waterfall the most difficult motif. It was better to sketch a real waterfall than to copy painted ones. Visiting Minoh Falls in Osaka was a trip for several nights from Kyoto.

　箕面の山にさしかかるや、仙境じみた空気が私を包んだ。数軒の旅籠（はたご）の前を過ぎると、あとは鬱蒼（うっそう）たる木々に包まれた山道である。京の町なかとは全く違う、豊かな植生に目を奪われた。様々な形の木の葉、羊歯の類、円い苔……それらが全て、絵手本から抜け出してきたように見える。生きた色彩をまとった、立体的な絵手本！

　Arriving at Mount Minoh, the hermit-land-like atmosphere enveloped me. After passing by a few hotels, the mountain path began in a thick forest. What rich vegetation ! Various shapes of leaves, strange ferns, round moss….The living, three-dimensional models with vivid colours !

　箕面の滝はあっけないほど近かった。滝音が大きくなってきたかと思うと、豊かな水を滔滔（とうとう）と落とす瀑布が見えてきた。轟きが腹にこたえる。細かな水しぶきが火照った面を覆う。ええやんか……この滝、眺め尽くしたる！

　Minoh Falls was nearer than I had expected. When the water sound got louder, the waterfall came into view. Its roar sounded in the stomach. The fine water splashes covered my hot face. Great! I'll observe thoroughly this waterfall!

　しかし、ほんまもんの滝は手ごわかった。あとからあとから流れ落ちる水を、どのように切り取ればよいのか。滝の頂に注目し、目で追えば、あっという間に落ち、落ち、落ちて、滝壺に飛び込み、砕け、裂け、川に溶け込み流れてゆく。じっと見つめているうちに、水は昇り、昇り、昇って、滝となる前の姿に回帰してゆくかのよう。― 初めもなければ、終わりもない。とらえようのない無限の変転。

But it was hard to sketch the real waterfall. How can I frame the falling water? When observing the top of the waterfall, the water falls, falls, falls into the bassin to crash, break, split, melt into water and flow. And the water seems to rise, rise, rise to return to what it were before having become the waterfall…The waterfall are rotating endlessly, without alfa or omega.

　水以上に難しいのが、そそり立つ岩であった。ぬめぬめと黒く聳える岩肌を目の当たりにすると、これまで学んできた絵手本の岩など、張りぼての作り物に思える。この重さを、固さを、奥行きを、どう描けばよいのか。
　やみくもに筆を重ねると、写生帖のなかの岩は真っ黒になってゆき、形も定かではなくなってゆく。ただ、岩の塊のようなものは胸の内に捕まえた気がした。
　

It was harder to sketch the rocks. The real black slimy rocks changed those in the model into artificial paper ones. How can I express this weight, solidity, and depth?

　While painting at random, the rocks in my sketchbook became vague and black. But I caught something like the real mass in my heart.

　急いで帰った私は、岩の手ごたえが消えぬうちに作画にとりかかった。遠山の影を背に、岩間から滝が顔を出すところはうまくいった。水は余計な線を加えず、紙の白地を生かして波しぶきを表す。小さな茅屋を画面の下方に配して、滝と岩組をつなげる（下図）。さあて、ここからだ。
　滝の雄大さを真底（まそこ）から支えるのは、峨峨たる岩組である。真に迫った岩が描ければ、仰ぎ見る白滝も実体を備えた、ほんまもんになる。…
　しかし、絵手本に頼らず岩を描くのは難儀であった。幅一尺（約30センチ）、長さ五尺余り（約140センチ）の大きな紙が、小さな写生帖と同じくみるみる黒ずんでゆく。墨筆から絵筆に持ち替え、緑青や藍、代赭（たいしゃ：茶）を塗り重ねるうちに、額から脂汗がにじみ出た。あのでっかい塊を、ごつごつ、ぬらぬらした盛り上がりを、この紙のなかに閉じ込めたる！

I hurried home and began to paint on a larger paper. The waterfall appears from the rocks against the silhouette of a distant mountain. The water splashes are expressed with the white ground of the paper. A small cottage connects the upper waterfall and the lower rocks. This is just the beginning! The great waterfall should be supported by the steep rocks in the painting. When I express the real rocks, the waterfall will become the real one.

But painting the rocks without the model was a demanding task. The large paper was getting sombre like the small sketchbook. I changed my ink brushes to paintbrushes. I WILL enclose the rocks’ slimy, rugged mass in this paper!

この茅屋は役行者の建てた箕面寺（のちの瀧安寺）の前身を表しているのかもしれない


　どや！大坂の滝も捨てたもんやおへんで。せや！「箕面」も唐風に「箕」と一文字にしたろ…「箕山」、隠者の巣父(そうほ)や許由(きょゆう)が住んでた山と同じ名前や。なおかつ、李白の詩「望廬山瀑布」をもじって…「箕山瀑布」！　
　隷書で書くんは重たいかな。篆書ふうにしょうか。せっかくやから、李白に敬意を表して漢詩もひねったろ。…はは、これぞ自画自賛や。

　How’s this? The waterfall in Osaka is as dignified as those in Chinese models! I make Minoh（箕面）Ki or Ji (箕) in Chinese style. Mount Ji is a famous mountain where Chinese hemits lived. And I parody Li Bai’s poem “Viewing Waterfall at Mount Lu”, “Waterfall at Mount Ji”!

　For this painting, I prefer the seal‐engraving style rather than the scribes' style of writing Chinese characters. I compose a Chinese poem after Li Bai. This is the inscription on one’s own painting.

　ここだけの話だが…じつは箕面の滝のてっぺんに、山影は見えぬ。これは廬山の香炉峰である。紫煙に包まれ、香炉そっくりと言われる美しい峰…この唐土の名峰を私は大坂の滝に描き加えた。
　清少納言の心に、見たこともない「香炉峰の雪」（白楽天の漢詩）が宿っていたように、私の心には「紫煙」（李白の漢詩）が宿る。清少納言は父、清原元輔から漢学を習った。日本人にとって、唐土はつねに父なる国、第二の故郷なのだ。

To tell the truth, you cannot see the silhouette of mountain at the top of the waterfall at Mt. Minoh.This is Xianglu Peak of Mount Lu with the purple mist like an incense burner…

While Sei Shonagon knew the snow on Xianglu Peak in the poem composed by Bai Juyi, I KNOW Xianglu Peak by Li Bai. Sei Shonagon learnt Chinese classics from her father. China has always been the second homeland, father-land for us, Japanese.
