(Monologue of Ike no Taiga 21)

We began to live separately since then. Leaving my wife in the hut of Makuzu-ga-hara near Gion, I took up my new residence near Chion-in Temple.
Do you remember that I visited Manpuku-ji Temple with my master Ichii? The temple, where I had received great applause of Chinese priests in my childhood, was to hold an event to celebrate the 100th death anniversary of the founder, Ingen-Zenji. I was requested the sliding door paintings of the east and west of an abbot's chamber.

What was the most impressive for me, a seven-year child who had lost his own father, was the statue of Buddha's son who shows his father's face in his chest. That was Ragora (Rāhula), one of eighteen arhats. This time I was to paint five hundred arhats who directly listened to Buddha's holy teachings.
I stayed in a hospice and observed the time-honored scroll in this temple with five hundred arhats drawn in the Ming Dynasty and the founder's calligraphy. On the third day morning, the arhats and animals on the scroll began to move!

The arhats crossing the ocean or gathering on the ground, strange animals such as Chinese lion, tiger, elephant…I began to paint in a free and easy style with soft and thick brushes. I used my fingers and paper strings also after a long time interval. I was afraid of being too skillful by painting with brushes only. I wanted to be modest and artless while representing the deep world of ZEN. I wanted to dedicate my clumsy and yet strong lines and colours to Buddha .

A white elefant is carrying an arhat on his back.
An old priest in red looks back and watches over a young one.
Let's cross the ocean together, my masters, my friends, my parents, Kaede, and Machi…

Why do I paint? I asked myself again and again while our separation. I am a painter who is absobed in painting without looking straightly at his partner in front of him. Even now I can only paint. My bewilderment, worry and problem are thrown at my painting and calligraphy. Painting and calligraphy are my karma and delusion. But what else inside of me?

I remember my passion in my twenties that forced me rub the ink and tears on my hands against papers. The drawing with fingers initiated by my master Yanagisawa became a lifeline of my unsteady state of mind.
The power toward the light of the life, the bestial, savage power ! If living is painting, I can only paint. If it is the karma, the life itself IS the karma ! Ah, painting resembles to eating and having sex!!

Taiga's portrait painted by one of his disciples

Now I am in my late forties and painting in order to return the favor to Manpuku-ji Temple…Thank Buddha I'm alive…I feel so spontaneously. Only the emotional dependence?
Thanks to my masters, my parents, my friends, and my wife I could have been alive. I will straightly go back to my wife after completing these paintings!

Landscape with Calligraphy, painting by Tokuyama Gyokuran(detail)

On handing in my paintings, I rushed back to the hut in Gion. My wife was found neither in the kitchen nor in the garden. I heard a noise in the direction of the parlor. Opening the sliding door, I saw her painting a landscape on a large sheet of paper.
I was astonished by that dynamic spectacle different from her usual ones. A drop of sweat fell from her uncombed forelock. She tried to catch it in midair with a hand, which I caught in my hands and she looked up me with her eyes wide open.
" When did you come home? "
" Machi, you were alone painting such a thing! "
" Oh no, please call me Gyokuran! I am Gyokuran Tokuyama, a painter and rival of Ike no Taiga."
 Her eyes gleamed.
” You, a painter Ike no Taiga, please write a fine caption on these paintings of my own! ”
