元雅（世阿弥の息子）の独白（snowdropのフィクションです）

　梅の香る能を作りたいと思った。梅の香りを強く感じるのはいつか？夜だ。夜は目が見えぬゆえ、人は匂いに敏感になる。目の見えぬ境遇…そうだ、この能の主人公は目の見えぬ青年としよう。

Monologue of Motomasa (Zeami's son) → 📚（Zeami）

　I want to compose a noh where plum blossoms smell sweet. When does the man smell the fragrance of flowers most strongly? It is the night. Because the man is blind during the night, he becomes sensitive to smell. Blind…yes, the hero of this noh is a blind young man.

　盲目の青年、俊徳丸は杖をついてさまよう。父に追い出され、悲しみのあまり盲目となったのだ。生まれついての盲目でないゆえ、まだ足元がおぼつかぬ。よろよろ歩く青年は「弱法師（よろぼし）」と呼ばれる。もはや誰も彼の本名を知らぬ。
　
　A blind young man, Shuntokumaru is wandering with his cane. He was turned out of the house by his father and cried so bitterly that he became blind. Because he was not born blind, his steps are still unsteady. He is called Yoroboshi because he walks totterlingly (adv. "yoro-yoro"). No one knows his original name now.

天王寺七坂の一つ、清水坂（Kiyomizu Slope）


　なぜ追い出されたのか。他人が息子をそしる言葉を父が信じたからだ。河内の高安から、あてもなく西へさすらい、天王寺界隈へたどり着いた。あてもなく？
　天王寺界隈は坂の多い土地だ。どの坂も四天王寺へ向かう。四天王寺まで登りつめれば、丘の上から海が見える。海へ没する夕日が見える。阿弥陀仏のさし招く極楽浄土が見える。目さえ見えれば…いや、阿弥陀仏に近い土地に行けるだけでもよい。
　青年は心のどこかで死に場所を求めていたのかもしれぬ。

　Why was he turned out of the house? Because his father believed a false charge against him. He wandered aimlessly from Takayasu toward the west, Tenno-ji region. Aimless?
　There are many slopes in the region. Every slope leads to Shitenno-ji Temple. When he reaches this temple, he will get the view of the sea, the sunset over the sea, Paradise of Amitabha Buddha, if only he can see…no, he is content even only he can go near Amitabha Buddha.
　At the back of his mind he might have looked for the place to die.
　

大江神社境内（Oe Shrine）


　父が息子を放逐したのは暮れであった。
（snowdropのツッコミ＊欧米ではクリスマス前の解雇はタブーとされます。正月前に追い出すとは、あまりな仕打ちと申せましょう）
　しかし、やがて後悔し、春の彼岸の前に四天王寺で施しを行い、息子の後世を祈る。息子が生きていて、四天王寺の方角へとぼとぼ歩いていることも知らず…
（snowdropのさらなるツッコミ＊もっとよく探しなさいよ！）

　It was a year end when the father threw his son out.
（snowdrop＊In the West, it is taboo to fire an employee in Advent. This father's treatment is too pitiless!)
　But soon the father regretted and gave charity at Shitenno-ji Temple praying for his son's peace in the posterity. He did not know his son is still alive and walking totteringly toward Shitenno-ji Temple.

さすが名に負ふ此寺の 仏法最初の天王寺の石の鳥居ここなれや ― 「弱法師」詞章より

鳥居の扁額には「釈迦如来転法綸所当極楽土東門中心」と記されている。
（snowdrop注＊釈迦をうたう鳥居！神仏習合ですね。オリジナルは宝物館で見られます）

　

　弱法師が施しを受けると、袖に梅の花びらが散りかかり、梅の香が匂い立った。草木国土悉皆成仏、花の散るのも施行のうち。仏の慈悲の深ければ、「澄める亀井の水」に住む盲目の亀をも導きたまう。

　When Yoroboshi received the charity, petals of fragrant plum blossoms scattered on his sleeves. All things have the Buddha's nature and scattering flowers also is a charity. The mercy of Buddha is so deep that he leads even blind tortoises living in "the limpid water in Tortoise Well" to Paradise.

　そのとき、父は目の前の盲目の乞食（かたい）が、死んだと思ったわが子だと気づく。なんと哀れな！しかし、人目をはばかり黙っている。夜になったら名乗り出、家に連れ帰るとしよう…

　At last the father recognized that poor blind begger was his own son! How miserable ! But he kept silent worrying about what other people thought. (When the night falls, I will step forward and bring him back home...)

　

東大門（East Gate）


　西に沈む夕日を拝む「日想観」の時刻となった。目の見えぬ悲しさ、弱法師は間違って反対の方角の東大門を拝んでしまう（上図）。
　拝むべき方角は西、極楽門であった（下図）。真朱（まほそ）の寺門から石の鳥居が、波打ち際が見渡せる。難波の海に入日の光が舞い踊る。
　弱法師の目に、せめて仄明るさだけでも感じられたであろうか。

　The time has come to contemplate Pure Land through the setting sun in the west. Blind Yoroboshi mistook East Gate (above fig.) for Paradise Gate (West Gate)(below fig.)
　From the red Paradise Gate, a stone torii-gate and the sea are to be overlooked. The dazzling setting sun over the sea ! Did Yoroboshi, in front of Paradise Gate, feel at least dim light ?
　

現在は海は見えません


　弱法師は思い出す。目の見えたころに眺めた、淡路の島にかかる月を。蘇る記憶の風景。淡路 絵島 須磨 明石 紀の海までも。心のなかの青山がありありと蘇る。
　そこへ今日のこの日の日想観のイメージが重なる。
　月と太陽、二つの光に照らされた、過去と現在、二つの景色が一つに重なる。これが四天王寺からのぞむ「彼岸」であろうか。 ―

　Yoroboshi remembered. The moon above Awaji Island he had seen before he became blind. The memory of the landscape revived, of Awaji, Suma, Ki-no-umi, etc.
　The blue mountains in his memory overlap in his mind with the image of the contemplation of the setting sun. The moon and the sun, the past and the present, two landscapes are overlapped.
　
　

石ノ鳥居から東の月を仰ぐ

南はさこそと夕波の。住吉の松影。東の方は時を得て。春の緑の草香山。北は何処。難波なる。長柄の橋　 ― 「弱法師」

　この場面を舞台正面から見る者は、弱法師の喜悦をまざまざと目にするであろう。
　この場面を橋掛かりから見る者は、二本の柱を極楽門の鳥居と見立て、客席にまぼろしの波を聴くであろう。
　人の記憶は視覚よりも聴覚、あるいは嗅覚によって呼び覚まされる。梅の香りと波の音が、弱法師の幸福な記憶を呼び覚ましたのだ。
　しかし、このあと私は 彼を奈落の底へ突き落とす。

　Those who see this noh play from front seating will see vividly Yoroboshi's delight.　
　Those who see this noh play from side seating will compare two pillows to the stone torii-gate of Paradise Gate and hear the imaginary sound of the sea.
　The memory is evoked by the hearing and smell rather than the sight. The fragrance of the plum blossoms and the sound of the sea brought back a happy memory of Yoroboshi. But soon after that, I throw him into the abyss.
